In the winter of 1953 and the spring of 1954, in a remote mountain valley of northwest Vietnam, the French Expeditionary Corps and the Vietnam People’s Army met in a decisive confrontation. History remembers the artillery, the assaults on the hills and the final surrender. This is the story of the other battle, the one fought on roads and rivers, in the air and on the shoulders of civilian porters, for rice, fuel, ammunition and medicine.
One side relied on an air bridge. The other built roads through the mountains and moved its supplies by truck, bicycle, raft and on foot. Each chapter below has a short narrated film, the full text, and the archive photographs.

À l'hiver 1953 et au printemps 1954, dans une vallée montagneuse isolée du nord-ouest du Vietnam, le corps expéditionnaire français et l'Armée populaire du Vietnam se sont affrontés lors d'une confrontation décisive. L'histoire a retenu l'artillerie, les assauts sur les collines et la capitulation finale. Voici l'histoire de l'autre bataille, celle qui fut menée sur les routes et les rivières, dans les airs et sur les épaules des porteurs civils, pour le riz, le carburant, les munitions et les médicaments.
Un camp s'en remit à un pont aérien. L'autre construisit des routes à travers les montagnes et déplaça son ravitaillement par camion, à bicyclette, en radeau et à pied. Chaque chapitre ci-dessous propose un court film narré, le texte intégral et des photographies d'archives.
